Death Spa (1988)

Death Spa (1988)

Watched this purely because of Brenda Bakke

An AI controlled gym goes crazy and starts killing people. People die. It also possesses people at a point.

Not a bad one really, cheap sets and props are showing, but the effects aren’t too bad. Actual explosions and decent makeup effects. Lighting is bad, but that’s par for the course.

The exact same plot would work even today, maybe someone will do a remake?

Not something I would ever watch again.

Gunmen (1993)

Gunmen (1993)

Gunmen (1993)

Mario Van Peebles, Christopher Lambert, Denis Leary and Patrick Stewart.

The cast is, by today’s standards, pretty stacked. The plot is a bit of a mess and clearly plot points have been edited in post (just dialog added to a static image).

Everything is so very very dark. All the time. Like hard to see dark. Bad guys only shoot on full auto and from the hip, they never hit anything.

This could’ve been something if someone would’ve turned the lights on. The plot isn’t completely bonkers, but this isn’t something you’d want to rewatch.

Marked for Death (1990)

Marked for Death (1990)

Directed by … who cares, it’s a Steven Seagal movie.

Seagal beats up a disturbingly young Danny Trejo after chasing him through the streets breaking shit. Then he goes on to do his super important undercover gig - and gets caught.

He goes to his home town that’s controlled by a Jamaican drug gang.

He crosses them, they shoot up his family a bit (nothing fatal). He goes on a rampage, even over to Jamaica at one point.

Lots of weird Seagal-running, shooting without actually hitting and his trademark stiff Aikido throws and arm breaks.

Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003)

Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003)

Directed by Jan de Bont - his last one ever

Also featuring a very young Gerard Butler

Compared to the first one, this has a really lame soundtrack. Just some generic movie stuff, not a single memorable track.

Universal Soldier (1992)

Universal Soldier (1992)

This was at the same time a lot cooler and a lot crappier than I remembered.

The Soldier Truckmobile was really cool in it’s ruggedness and dirtiness. If this same movie was made today, it’d be all shiny and pretty. It looked like it was actually being used and wasn’t cleaned with a toothbrush between missions.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001)

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001)

Directed by Simon West

Angelina Jolie with the future James Bond - Daniel Craig in one of his first roles in a big movie.

This is one of the movies where the world would’ve been just fine if the main character would’ve just stayed at home. The bad guys would’ve fucked it up at the first mystery location and missed their 5000 year window.

But nope.

We do get good action with an epic soundtrack with some absolute 90’s bangers. Everything is competently directed and the sets look very Laracrofty.

Hard Target (1993)

Hard Target (1993)

Hard Target (1993)

Directed by John Woo

Starring JCVD and all the regular 90’s baddies and a fleet of no-name people who are there just to get shot at 42 times

Pigeons, all the pigeons. Slo-mo. Everything explodes. Nobody hits anything despite shooting hundreds of bullets everywhere.

There are a bunch of cool shots though, some fit to be posters themselves.

The plot is pretty regular, might be a bit better with less action and more investigating. Amazon’s Jack Reacher -style.

But then this wouldn’t be a JCVD / John Woo movie.
